This week Twitter has doubled its character allowance from 140 to 280 for most users.
Does this present us with 140 more opportunities to captivate our audiences and get our message across? To even tell a story? Save a life? Or does this dilute the very essence of Twitter?
The early returns are that it really does make a small – but meaningful – difference. As someone who suffers from Asthma, I loved Asthma UK’s first 280 tweet. Hats off to you guys – that was genius.
Is brevity the soul of Twitter? It doesn’t have to be, especially when the extra social real estate can help us deliver a more nuanced, maybe even more mobilising message.
